Pacman on His Early Boxing Career

Before Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao achieved all the success in his boxing career, he firstly became an amateur boxer at the age of 14. He moved to Manila at that age because his mother cannot afford to send him in the school because of too much poverty. He began his boxing career in the Certificate Course in Development, Legislation and Governance at the Development Academy of the Philippines – Graduate School of Public and Development Management.

In 1995, Pacman began his professional boxing career in Light Flyweight Division as Eugene Barutag, his close friend and a young wannabe boxer, died. It encouraged the young Pacman to pursue his professional boxing career at that time. He was 16 years old when he started his career in boxing professionally. He stood 4’11” and weighed 98 pounds.

He confessed that before in American media that he put weights in his pockets to reach the 105 pounds limit of weight. His early fights in the light flyweight division occurred in small local places and were publicized on an evening boxing show called Vintage Sports’ Blow by Blow. Pacman’s professional debut was a four round match against Edmund Ignacio on January 22, 1995, wherein Pacman won via decision. He became an instant star on the said program.

His weight increased from 160 pounds to 113 pounds before losing his 12th match against Rustico Torrecampo thru a knockout on the third round. Pacman failed to make the needed weight, so he was forced then to use gloves that were heavier than Torrecampo, thus putting him at a difficult situation.
